The singer took to social media to pay a very emotional tribute to Breonna Taylor on what would have been her 27th birthday. John Legend is one of the many celebrities fighting for justice and racial equality and one of the people who is yet to receive justice is Taylor, who was shot 8 times and killed in her own bed by the police.
Breonna was an awarded essential worker and someone really respected and loved in her community of Louisville, Kentucky.
She was also one of the many innocent black Americans senselessly dying at the hands of the police and amid the George Floyd protests, John Legend made sure to remind people about her as well, since the ones responsible for her death are yet to be punished.
The singer started his letter by saying that ‘Breonna should be celebrating her 27th birthday today. Like many Black women, she was an essential worker, an emergency medical technician, the type of first responder we depend on during this ongoing pandemic. She’d planned on becoming a nurse and dreamed of being a wife and a mother.’
He went on to share what happened to her and stressed that Black Lives Matter should not be turned into a matter of gender as if only men are victims of police brutality.

‘But after midnight on March 13, officers barged into her apartment, fired off more than twenty bullets, 8 of which took Breonna’s life. They had the wrong home as well as an illegal no knock search warrant. Now it is time for us to join together and emphatically SAY HER NAME. Black women created this call to action as we continue to talk about the generations long crisis of police and vigilante violence in a gendered way, as if it only happens to Black men,’ the Grammy awarded singer wrote.
