The death of Kristoff St. John on February 3 was a blow to nearly anyone who watched daytime TV. It was previously believed that the soap actor passed away from intentional alcohol poisoning but it’s been revealed that there’s more to the story.
The autopsy report shows that Kristoff passed due to heart disease and the effect of alcohol. There was also anxiety medication in his system at the time of death.
What’s even more saddening was that St. John was admitted to a mental health hospital on January 26, just days before his death, for threatening to hurt himself and alcohol abuse.
According to Radar Online, the medical documents also showed that Kristoff struggled with suicidal ideation, bipolar disorder, and alcohol dependency. The daytime TV legend was never the same since his 24-year-old son died by suicide in 2014.
Although Kristoff did have a recent history of suicidal thoughts, there’s no evidence that his death was on purpose.
Meanwhile, the soap opera that he spent multiple decades playing Neil Winters is readying a storyline to say goodbye to his irreplaceable character. They plan to bring back his character’s TV brother (Shemar Moore) and wife (Victoria Rowell) to honor him.
Both of the television veterans have expressed deep sadness since learning of Kristoff’s passing.
CBS released a statement shortly after news broke that read: “The news of Kristoff St. John’s passing is heartbreaking. He was a very talented actor and an even better person. For those of us who were fortunate enough to work with him on ‘The Young and the Restless’ for the last 27 years, he was a beloved friend whose smile and infectious laugh made every day on set a joy and made audiences love him. On behalf of the ‘Y&R’ cast and crew, CBS and Sony Pictures Television, we offer our heartfelt sympathy to his family and loved ones, especially his two daughters, Paris and Lola.”
After receiving backlash from fans concerning Kristoff’s last episode, the network revealed they were working on a storyline that promised to do St. John’s character justice.
