Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete who competes in the javelin throw. In 2021, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Chopra made his Olympic debut. Although a lot was expected from the young man from Haryana, not many expected him to go all the way and strike gold. However, on the 7th of August, with a throw of 87.58, Chopra became the first post-independence medalist from India in Athletics.

His success stories didn’t just stop there. He went on to strike gold at the 2022 Diamond League, and 2022 World Championships and more recently won the gold at the 2023 World Championships held in Budapest.

Neeraj was born on 24 December 1997 in Panipat, Haryana, India. He measures 1.82m (6ft 0 in) and weighs around 86kg (190lbs). Besides being an athlete, Neeraj is a Junior Commissioned Officer of the Indian Army with the rank of Naib Subedar in 2016.

Moreover, he is the first Indian athlete to ever win a world title in track and field in the U-20 category.

His gold medal win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics shot him to super-stardom as he became, ‘independent’ India’s first medal winner in Athletics. He followed it up with Gold at the 2022 Diamond League and Silver at the 2022 World Championships. His most recent win was gold at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.

Neeraj has been previously coached by the legendary Uwe Hohn. Hohn is a retired German track and field athlete who competed in the javelin throw. He is the only athlete to throw a javelin 100 meters or more, with his world record of 100.80m. A new javelin design was implemented in 1986 and the records had to be restarted, thus Hohn’s mark became an “eternal world record”. However, Neeraj is currently working with German bio-mechanics expert Klaus Bartonietz.
