Actress Rose McGowan is speaking out on her iconic barely there dress she wore to the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards. It was the most talked about dress at an awards show at the time, this was pre-J. Lo days, because she literally put her entire body on display in a sheer dress.

Now the Charmed star is sharing why she chose to wear a completely see-through dress, with an exposed thong to such a high-profile Hollywood event. As it turns out she had an excellent, yet also sad, reason she chose to leave nothing to the imagination in her style choice. It was a strategic move making more than just a fashion statement.

“I did that for a reason. It was my first public appearance after being raped,” McGowan said in a candid conversation with actress and activist Jameela Jamil in her I Weigh interview series.

McGowan has accused Harvey Weinstein of raping her back in 1997. She was one of the first women to speak out against the disgraced movie mogul in October 2017. Weinstein has been accused of decades of sexual misconduct and assault by various women in the entertainment industry.

“I thought, it was kind of like Russell Crowe and Gladiator when it comes out in the ring and he’s like, ‘Are you not entertained?’ And that was why I did that. That was my response to being assaulted,” she continued to tell The Good Place star.

Rose McGowan also opened up about her much-hyped about barely there VMA’s dress, on an episode of The Dr. Oz Show.

“I’ve never worn something like that before or since. That was a political statement. Of course, there was no Twitter at the time or Instagram, no way to speak for yourself,” the 45-year-old expressed last year to Dr. Oz.

The actress attended the event on the arm of her then-boyfriend Marilyn Manson. However, all anyone could talk about was how the actress essentially showed up naked to one of the most significant Hollywood events of the year. It wasn’t even a decent looking outfit because there was nothing there, but that was not her point.

Fashion was McGowan’s way of making a statement for herself. She has not been shy about speaking vocally about what Weinstein and another man did to her. The interview with Jamil was very candid, raw and definitely worth a listen.
