A fancy new cinema with a crazy 67-metre wide screen has just opened in Australia.
It’s called ScreenX and it’s located at Event Cinemas Robina in Queensland.
ScreenX is made up of three screens, one at the front and two on the sides, meaning moviegoers can be completely immersed in scenes.
“I really think ScreenX may be the future of cinema,” director James Gunn has previously said about the technology. “I think it’s great to have something that really surrounds you in a real way.
“We’ve had sound surrounding us for many years in theatres … so why not broaden out what we’re seeing on the screen to make us really feel like we’re in that environment.”
Here’s what you need to know about ScreenX.
ScreenX has been available overseas for a couple of years but it’s only just arrived in Australia.
Only certain movies can be shown in ScreenX because it involves working with filmmakers to be able to have scenes that can expand across three screens.
The side screens don’t stay on the whole movie. They’re used for selected scenes to enhance big moments.
Insiders say the trick is to focus on the centre screen during the film and to let the side screens fill your peripheral vision.

The first films that are available to watch in ScreenX at Event Cinemas Robina are Meg 2: The Trench and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
Event Cinemas plans to roll out ScreenX nationally, including in Sydney later this year.
