Wout Weghorst is a Dutch professional soccer player who has represented, as a striker, FC Emmen (2012-2014), Heracles Almelo (2014-2016), and AZ Alkmaar (2016-2018) in the Netherlands; VfL Wolfsburg (2018-2022) in Germany; and Burnley F.C. (2022-Present) in England. He has also spent loan spells with Beşiktaş J.K. (2022-2023) in Turkey and Manchester United F.C. (2023-Present) in England. With Manchester United F.C., Wout won the EFL Cup (an annual knockout competition that is open to clubs within the top 4 levels of the English soccer league system) in the 2022-23 season. It was the club’s 6th such title which made it the then 3rd most successful team in the competition. He scored his very first goal for Manchester United F.C. in the first leg of the semi-final stage of the 2022-23 EFL Cup and then assisted the 2nd goal in the club’s 2-0 win in the final. Incredibly, this was the first time in his senior-level club career (nearly 11 years old by this time) that he had won a major trophy. At the international level, Wout represented the Netherlands in a solitary game (scoring a goal against Portugal in a 5-4 defeat in October 2014) at the under-21 tier before making his senior national debut in March 2018.

Wout Weghorst Facts
Wout started his youth career at a local club called RKSV NEO. He later joined the youth team of DETO Twenterand, an amateur soccer club based in Vriezenveen, Overijssel, Netherlands. In 2011, aged 19, he joined the youth academy of Willem II, a professional soccer club based in Tilburg, Netherlands. His senior career began in 2012 with FC Emmen, a professional soccer club based in Emmen, Drenthe, Netherlands. In his 2nd season with the Dutch professional soccer club Heracles Almelo (2014-2016), Wout helped the team finish 6th in the Eredivisie (the top division of the Dutch professional soccer league system). The team got through the subsequent play-offs and eventually made it to the qualifying round of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Europa League (the 2nd-tier club competition in European soccer, ranking below the UEFA Champions League). It was the first time in history that the club had qualified for an international competition.Representing the Dutch top-flight club AZ Alkmaar, in the 2017-18 season, Wout scored 20 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions. With 18 goals, he also finished the season as the joint 3rd highest scorer in the Eredivisie. In March 2019, he scored what was the first hat-trick (the feat of scoring 3 goals (not necessarily consecutive) in a match) by any player for the German top-tier club VfL Wolfsburg since April 2017.Wout finished the 2018-19 season (his first in Germany and his first outside the Netherlands) with 17 goals and stood joint-3rd on the Bundesliga (the top division of the German professional soccer league system) goalscoring charts. He then scored 16 goals in the 2019-20 season of the Bundesliga, helping VfL Wolfsburg finish in 6th place. In the Netherlands’ opening group stage match of the 2020 edition (played in June and July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) of the UEFA European Championship aka the UEFA Euro (a quadrennial continental international championship), against Ukraine, Wout scored his team’s 2nd goal in a crucial 3-2 victory. The Netherlands eventually finished the group stage in pole position with a perfect haul of 9 points. The team was, however, knocked out in the pre-quarterfinal stage of the tournament after a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Czech Republic. When Wout scored his first goal for the English club Burnley F.C. in February 2022, it helped the team end an 11-game winless streak. In December 2022, in the quarter-final stage of the FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) World Cup, against eventual and 3rd-time champions Argentina, he came on as a late substitute and scored 2 goals to nullify the 2-0 lead that Argentina had taken by the 73rd minute of regulation time. These were just the 4th and 5th goals of his senior-level international career for the Netherlands. Wout first scored in the 83rd minute of the match and then scored the equalizer as late as in the 11th minute of stoppage time – from a free-kick on the edge of the box that was played directly to him.The 2-2 scoreline sent the match into extra time and an eventual penalty shootout. Argentina led the penalty shoot-out by a 3-1 margin by the time Wout took his spot-kick. He continued his heroic effort on the night by successfully converting his penalty to reduce the margin to 3-2. Argentina, however, managed to eke out a 4-3 win to eliminate the Netherlands from the competition. The heated match saw a total of 18 yellow cards and broke the previous record (16 yellow cards) that was set in another Dutch knockout defeat – against Portugal in the pre-quarter-final stage of the 2006 edition of the tournament. This December 2022 clash between these 2 giants of global soccer was the 4th time that they had locked horns in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup – with Argentina winning by a 3-1 margin in the final of the 1978 edition of the tournament, the Dutch winning by a 2-1 margin in the quarter-final stage of the 1998 edition, and Argentina winning the penalty shootout by a 4–2 margin in the semi-final of the 2014 edition.Featured Image by Wout Weghorst / Instagram
